LowellAnn’s Story

Solopreneurs will want to know LowellAnn’s story before deciding to connect.  So let’s get to know each other!

la-44WEBHere’s My Story

In my twenties, I observed something that impacted the rest of my life.  I met a lady in her late 50’s – early 60’s whose husband had just died of a heart attack.  She just didn’t know what to do.  She was left with a car she couldn’t drive and total confusion over money; she had never even paid a telephone bill! As a young wife and mother, I vowed this would never, ever happen to me.  This decision took me on to university, participation in the feminist movement, into volunteer board contribution, positions of responsibility in the Canadian government, adventure into northern communities, into consulting and solopreneurship.

How I Got Into This Work

After twenty years in career and employment work with the Canadian federal government, it seemed natural to find something constructive to do following early retirement, and Workstyle-Lifestyle Consulting became a reality. My consulting work took me to many communities in northern Canada where I worked with emerging leaders in the new Arctic territory Nunavut. I soon discovered that two or three-day workshops were a great start for participants, but continued support and encouragement were necessary for the application of new skills and approaches, so I began to provide one-on-one telephone support. Later, I learned about an emerging new discipline called Coaching and realized that I had already discovered it. I learned a lot more from Thomas Leonard and Coachville and hired my own coach before I decided to add formal coaching to my repertoire of consulting/training services. Coaching felt just right because of its similarity to career counselling I had practised for years.

What Inspires Me

The most inspiring activity for me is staying current in my field and branching out into new fields of interest. I have been particularly inspired by Peter Senge’s Fifth Discipline, Michael Gerber’s E-Myth, Steven Covey’s Seven Habits, First Things First, and 8th Habit, Frederic Hudson’s Life Launch and Esther & Jerry Hicks’ The Amazing Power of Deliberate Intent and The Astonishing Power of Emotions. The works of Ken Wilber (A Brief History of Everything and more) and Robert Kegan (Immunity to Change) are of special interest.

More recently I have taken a dive into Ken Wilber’s The Religion of Tomorrow and Integral Life Practice

I’ve found stimulation and growth in Conscious Business. Waking Up The Workplace and subsequent Academy courses provide some leading-edge thinking and processes for this new age.

Today, I’m excited and inspired by all the online tools that are a boon to the solopreneur – the ever-changing world of Google, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram and Twitch.

My biggest inspiration right now is the opportunity to host my weekly Being Your Own CEO Success Circle for solopreneurs via Zoom and YouTube Live. We’ve enjoyed each other’s company while sharing techniques and information and providing moral support to each (for about fives years now).  Participants even end up doing business together!

I have taken some great courses in website development at Wealthy Affiliates and have started creating them for myself and others.  This is the most recent:  Victoria Chinatown Care Centre

What do I believe?

  • Firmly believe that men and women can benefit from using their right brain (feminine skills) in business. And they can be independent and successful in business regardless of their age.
  • Contribution to community is what provides meaning in our lives.
  • Live Streaming (YouTube or Zoom) will change the way we do business on the net.
  • Google + is the best place to interact and market for solo entrepreneurs who want to connect with other businesses and gain profile with Google Search.  Update:  Now that Google Plus has gone away for most people, I am now exploring Discord.  Here’s my invitation to come and have a look

My Leisure Time Joys

Maintaining good health is very important to me. My fitness partner and I aim for an hour four mornings a week. We have discovered the joy of sunrise on the beach and that it’s a great way to begin a day!  I’ve also discovered this is a great time to play with photography from my smartphone.

My indoor/balcony gardening gives me a great deal of pleasure. It’s fun to be able to tell all my northern friends and clients about the flowers that are in bloom throughout the winter in Victoria.

I participate in Victoria’s famous Gettin’ Higher Choir. It’s a great way to meet like-minded folks, connect with our love of music and support a community in Mozambique.  This term I am giving the Wavelengths Community Choir a try.

I got a lot of joy from assisting with the development of this Aboriginal Library at Victoria’s Native Friendship Centre.  A very welcoming place!

I was an active leadership member of HOST (Home Office Support Team) over the years.  This is a business networking organization that has operated in Victoria since 1995 – A great place to meet and connect with other solopreneurs.

In this choir season of Wavelengths, I volunteered to be the choir Facebook geek.  I post announcements and have formed a Community Waves Group Page.  My way of contributing but also to force me to learn more about Facebook.
