Video Communication Platforms

Recently we had a conversation (on #BeingYourOwnCEO) about the many choices that #solopreneurs have for conducting video conversations.  One of our members (thank you +JayNeill) suggested the place to begin is to do a Needs Analysis before choosing one.

Before your session

Who do you want to connect with?  Where do they hang out?  What is their technical proficiency?  How do they feel about being in front of a camera?  How do you want to market your session?  Will you want them to register before viewing/joining?  Will you want them to pay for the session?  What do you want to do? (simply chat one-on-one?  do a presentation?  do a series of sessions for a workshop?  host a group conversation (success circle)?  do interviews?)

During your session

Do you want the broadcast to be recorded?  Will you want it automatically uploaded to You Tube?  Will you want to move people in and out of the green room (film strip)?  Is it likely someone will want to share their screen?  Will you want to be able to take over a participant screen (with their permission of course)?  Will you want viewers to be able to engage in text conversation?  Will you want the texting to be recorded along with the video?  Will you want to hide the text conversations?  Will you want to field questions from the viewers?  Will you want to show a presentation and see/keep your notes private?  Will you want the assistance of a co-moderator?  Will you want the ability to mute participants – or even exclude someone on the spot?

After Your Session

Will you want participants to be able to re-watch the session?  Will you want them to be able to add comments during the re-watch?  Will you want to be able to connect with them later personally?  Will you want to be notified when someone new has viewed or added comments?  Will you want to do some revisions to the video recording?  Will you want to re-purpose the recording (e.g. podcast)?  Will you want to invite participants to more sessions?

Then there are some general things to consider

  • Is the site reliable, without dropped calls?
  • Is downloading programs necessary for use of the program or is there direct access from a browser?
  • How does the platform function on smart phones?
  • Is the app available to all smart phones (IOS * Android) and in all countries?
  • Is the dashboard easy to manage from one screen?
Have I missed anything?  Is there anything you would add to this list of questions?

If we know that viewer preference is leaning toward video and away from print AND away from desktop toward smartphones, then it’s time to review your own business and reflect on how you might make use of video to interest more clients.  Take some time to do your Needs Analysis and have a look at these platforms.
